Although Samhain connotes the start of the Pagan year, Imbolc is often see as the best time for new beginnings – it’s a great time for new members to be initiated into covens, to start new projects or to prepare the earth for planting. Imbolc is the celebration of ‘…the awakening earth, of the light returning and new life stirring.’ (p.20, Kindred, 2017) and so any celebrations or activities that you do on Imbolc should try to refer back to this idea.

One of the best ways I can recommend celebrating Imbolc is to either have a nice big clean of the entire house in general and to specifically either re-do or create a space for studying, relaxation or meditation. This cleaning allows all the winter atmosphere and darkness to be cleaned out and properly sets you up ready for spring, summer and the bright sun. I decided to completely redo my study area for this Imbolc so that I have an area more suited for studying, concentration and to also help me focus. I absolutely love my new space as it’s full of fantastic objects, incense and crystals to keep me focused.

Imbolc is also the festival of Brigid as she personifies all the same energies as Imbolc. They are both all about the growing light in the world and the significance that winter is coming to an end. Brigid is revered in Gaelic traditions as being the Goddess of Light and fire so another way that you can celebrate Imbolc is through having a lovely big bonfire or by lighting loads of tea-lights. You can also burn some of your Yule Log that has been saved from the previous Yule to symbolise even further the retreat of winter since the Winter Solstice.

Another way to celebrate Brigid at this time is to create Brigid’s Cross as part of a hearth ritual. This ritual and how to make the cross will available to view on our website in a few days time.

My final suggestions for bring Imbolc energy into your life are very simple. Firstly, cleanse your crystals! Put them all out under the full moon on January 31stin some salt water and allow all of them to have a deep, clear cleanse so that as you use them over the next few weeks/months they are at their very best. My other suggestion is to take a long walk outside and try to spot as many signs of spring as possible. As you do, say hello to the earth waking up and start waking up your brain from the hibernation state it has been in over the holiday period of December. Now is the time to grasp life with both hands and get started on all those fantastic projects and great opportunities that are out there!

I have so many things that I’m excited to start at Imbolc thanks to its fantastic and fresh spring time energy and I know with the above ideas, I’ll have Brigid and Imbolc’s energy following me with each step. Please let me know what are your plans this Imbolc and for the coming months as I’d love to hear about what you’re all striving for this year!
