Since the spiritual year begins on October 31st, I thought the perfect way to kick off this blog would be to give you some great ideas of how you can inject a little bit of Halloween (also known as Samhain or All Hallow’s Eve) into your day without it taking over absolutely everything!
Over the years of doing Halloween I’ve found that it is really important to make sure you have a special, clean, calm place to be able to retreat to in the midst of the fake cobwebs and jumpscare toys that come with decorating your house up. For me, it’s my study area in our spare bedroom. This space is set up all year round with some incense, fairylights and an open desk. This way I can use it for whatever I want – lighting candles, meditation… even just looking out the window and thinking about the day.
Some of the incense or candle smells that I use are:
Sandalwood (promotes spiritual awareness)
Rosemary (for rememberance)
Gingerbread
Pumpkin
I also use a black cloth and orange candles to decorate the space. This way I feel like I'm bringing in some of the halloween energy into my space in a non-intrusive way.
Often, I spend October 31st thinking about the people that have passed on in the year and trying make sure that I fix the good memories in my mind of them. There’s a reason that Halloween is often said to be a day where the veil between worlds is thin.
More recently, I’ve started making a very autumnal meal on Halloween in order to celebrate without having to do anything crazy (especially since this year it’s on a week day). One way you can acknowledge those who have passed is by setting a place at the table for anyone you’ve lost this year in rememberance. I also like saying a few words for our loved ones as we sit down to the meal and I’ve taken inspiration from Rae Beth’s The Hedge Witch’s Way(p.167 & 168, 2003) for this years meal.
Help us all remember loved friends and relatives who have died, and sense their love for us. Help us all to hear their advice and guidance… Merry meet and merry part and merry meet again.
Overall, I'm very excited for Halloween, just as I am every single year. Whether you celebrate it with spellwork, practising your divination skills (a great thing to do on halloween) or just with a big party with all your friends - I hope you have a fantastic day and enjoy the beginning of your spiritual journey with me!
